It's Buddy Week at LOGOS!

Did you know that the word "friend" appears in the Bible over 99 times?
(I didn't count myself, however, Google is seldom wrong!)

Some references to friends in the Bible are Proverbs 18:24, Proverbs 17:17, Proverbs 27:6, Proverbs 27:10, Eccl. 4:9, John 15:13-14. One of the famous friendships of the Bible is between David and Jonathan. How about the friendship between Ruth and Naomi? I'm sure you could come up with more examples. It is very timely that the Sunday School was talking about friendship this week. I noticed on the bulletin board that the children pinned up cards with ideas on how to be a good friend. They had some cool ideas....one caught my eye. It suggested that a friend invites other friends to the activities they enjoy. So, don't keep LOGOS a secret invite a friend this week.

If you haven't guessed yet....It's Buddy Night at LOGOS!

Do you have a great friend that would love LOGOS? Is there someone that you'd like to become better friends with? Or, get to know a little more? Perhaps, spend more time with? Well, invite them to LOGOS where friends are part of our family and our greatest friendship is with Jesus Christ. We have another fun-packed evening planned for you and your guests. Mrs. Wise has also shared that there is a special gift for those who bring a buddy. On the menu: Amigo Pita Pockets, Smiley Fries, Apple Slices, and Fudgesicles. Just call the church office and let them know if you are bringing a friend so we can feed them well!

Q: What Do Noah's Ark LOGOS Night, Soup 'n Inspiration, and Vacation Bible School All Have in Common?

A: Fun, Fellowship, Food, and Love for You!
We love you, we want you to join us (and in some cases we need you!) for these events.

1. The theme this week at LOGOS is Noah's Ark
Invite a friend or "two" to join the fun. There are only a few opportunities left to bring a friend this semester. Just give the church office a heads up so we can feed your friend well. Also, April 6th is our last day of LOGOS for the 2010-2011 Year. Nancy is planning a potluck and "Best of LOGOs" Program for that day. Stay tuned for more details.

2. Join us this Wednesday for Soup & Inspiration
While your LOGOS age children are eating something "two x two" the rest of the family is welcomed to join us for some homemade soup, bread, and dessert at 6pm. At 7pm, guest Speaker, Dr. Dean Smith, Chair of Biblical Studies at Geneva College will be presenting on "Anticipations of the Messiah." There will be child care at 7pm. The school-age children can hang out and do their homework and the little ones can play in the nursery while the adults attend this discussion from the Book of Isaiah.

3. Shake It Up Cafe Vacation Bible School
Mark Your Calendars....a great time is being whipped up and the only ingredient missing is you. We are now accepting volunteers (adult and teen) and registrations for children (age 4 thru 6th grade). Bring a Book: Better known to most readers as Dr. Seuss, Dr. Theodor Geisel was born over 100 years ago on March 2nd. Please bring a gently used or new book to LOGOS to donate in honor of this beloved childrens writer's birthday.

If you invite some friends....that would be swell!
Just let us know so we can feed them well.

Theme Change: Crazy Hair Night at LOGOS

You asked for it....so show us what you got! Bring on the crazy hair.

In response to the popular kid demand...Mrs. Wise has decided to change the theme to Crazy Hair Day.
If you'd still like to show up with your clothes backwards, feel free to do so, but the theme has officially changed to Crazy Hair. FYI, the menu has not changed.

If you're not afraid to be seen with your new hair-do, invite a friend to join the fun. Just call the church office and let them know so we can feed your friends well!

It's a Hearty Party.....

We're celebrating Valentine's Day LOGOS style tomorrow. Wear your pink, red, hearts.....whatever speaks "Valentine's Day" to you!

Do you still have a donation for the Valentine Care Packages?
We appreciate it! Please drop off by 4pm on Wednesday (2/9). The Packing begins at 5pm!

The kids will be putting these Care Boxes together with prayers, love, notes of encouragement and the donated goodies from you and other church members. What a great way for you to show the teens away at school that we all love them and are thinking about them.

Valentine's College Care Packages

We want to let the college kids away at school know we love them

and we are thinking of them and praying for them.

If you'd like to contribute notes of encouragement, small treats or

other Valentines, a collection box will available this Wednesday.

The children will use these items along with church member contributions
to create the care packages next Wednesday (2/9) during LOGOS.

Hello All

Summer is almost over and school is just around the bend....Time for
LOGOS! Lots of familiar and lots of new things will be happening this year at LOGOS.

Your child is invited to the first meeting of LOGOS for 2009-2010 on Wednesday, September 9, from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. First, however, we will have the annual Parent Meeting on Wednesday, September 2, at 7:00 pm. This mandatory, adult only meeting will last 1 hour and is designed to show an overview of the program and a preview of the year. At least one parent/guardian from each family MUST attend in order to register your child for the 2009-2010 year. There will also be a few forms to fill out. By attending this parent meeting, you will receive a $5 registration day discount! Bring your friends, family, and neighbors with LOGOS age children to find out more about this program.

I am looking forward to the start of LOGOS and getting to know your children,
and you, better. We have a lot of exciting fun planned. The most important of all is renewing and providing nurturing, loving Christian relationships between all involved, children and adults alike.

If you cannot attend the Parent Meeting, please contact me at 412-759-9132 to arrange a private meeting. You may also contact Heritage Church (412-366-1338) with any questions. All registrations must be in before Friday, September 4, 2009.

Starting September 13th, our new worship times are 9:00 am (Traditional) and 11:00 am (Contemporary), and Sunday school is between services at 10:10 am. See you on the 2nd, if not before.

Welcome to Gadget's Garage at Heritage Church

The first day of VBS was a blast. Here's a reminder of what's planned for the rest of the week:
• Tuesday is Crazy Hair Day...go for it!
• Wednesday is Water Day please wear your swimsuit under your clothes and bring a change of clothes and a towel
• Thursday is Bring a Friend Day....bring a friend to see what fun you've been having. VBS attendees who bring a friend will be entered to win a prize.
• Friday is the concluding festivities begin at 11:30. Rejoin your children for the closing assembly, slide show, and family picnic. Siblings and grand parents are welcomed too! (A sign up sheet will be available starting tomorrow).
• VBS kids are invited to sing the VBS songs at Heritage Church’s 11:15 Worship Service this Sunday. We hope you'll be able to join us.

Our mission project for VBS is The Doorway. For more info about them you can go to their website www.doorway.org or ask one of the teen volunteers from our youth group. Many regularly volunteer at the Door Way’s after school program. Children who feel led to may contribute to the loose change offering to benefit the children and families of the Doorway.

March 29 - LOGOS Kids Sing: The LOGOS kids will be singing during the 11:15 am Worship Service at Heritage Church. Led by Morgan Mihelic and Beth Lawhead they will be performing songs learned this year. Please have your children at Heritage by 10:55 am. Let Nancy know if you will NOT be able to attend. The more voices the better the sound. Thanks.

April 1 - Best of LOGOS - Last Day: Everyone is welcomed to join us for the last evening of LOGOS. Bring the whole family to celebrate the Best of LOGOS 2008-09. We’ll enjoy a potluck dinner (see Nancy for sign up sheet), the kids will sing and demonstrate what was learned, and more. The children will arrive at 4:00 pm as usual. Parents will join us at LOGOS at 6:00 pm.

Valentine Care Packages for College Students

We are now collecting items for Valentine Care Packages to be sent to our college students. The kids look forward to our special valentine packages from LOGOS...especially those that attended and grew up through the LOGOS program.

Any individually wrapped items are great - cookies, gum, candy, pencils, popcorn, notepads, crackers, etc. No liquids or peanut butter please.

Bring your donations to LOGOS next week or drop them off during Church hours this week or next. Thank you for your participation in this project to send something special to show our children away from home that we are thinking about them and praying for them. Out of sight is not out of mind.

LOGOS Kids Help "Bag Hunger"

Over 60 Bags of food were collected last week by the LOGOS children during their campaign to "Bag Hunger." The food was dedicated at Heritage Church this Sunday. Dr. Toliver gave a beautiful dedication in which we thanked God for the food collected and she said a blessing for those who donated the food, those who collected the food, those who will be the recipients of the food, those who helped in anyway and even those who thought of helping out but could not for various reasons. The food will be delivered to the Light of Life Mission. Good Job kids!

Trunk 'n Treat winners TBA on Wed.

We had a blast at Trunk 'n Treat. Despite the cold weather many hearty souls decorated their trunks and faithfully stood outside in the elements to shovel piles of candy into the bags of delighted children. Wimps like Wendy decided to pass candy out indoors in the warmth and festivities of Fellowship Hall. The Air Castle allowed several children at a time to work off that extra sugar energy. Once the kids had their exercise they were able to play games and make crafts indoors. The LOGOS cooks made sure we had something besides candy to munch on with the hotdogs and the apple slices. And, many moms and LOGOS staff provided tasty baked goods. We are trying to gather up the photographs of the evening to share with you. Thank you to all the church members, family and friends, LOGOS staff and parents, children and community who attended, helped, donated time, candy, and prizes. It was a great night. The costume winners will be announced tomorrow night at LOGOS. Don't forget to wear your red, white, and blue....It's God Bless America Night.

This week is TRUNK OR TREAT

Alternate Schedule: Please bring your costumes with you to LOGOS. At 6:00pm instead of our usual dinner ritual, the children will meet parents and change into costumes. A dinner of hot dogs and other snacks will be available as well as trunk or treating and festivities in the Fellowship Hall.

All are welcome- kids, adults, friends, family, and neighbors! Feel Free to invite someone to attend.

Park Safely to Protect Our Children: When you enter the parking lot after 5:30, the Trunk or Treat will be set up on the right side by the Fellowship Hall. If you are NOT passing candy from your trunk, please park your car on the left side of the parking lot.

Please make sure you come into the fellowship hall for some food and fun. We will have a ballot for the prizes for best kid and adult costume and best car decoration. There will also be our great door prizes. You may take home a prize from the Franklin Inn Mexican Restaurant, Mihelic's Shop 'n Save, the Pittsburgh Zoo or other cool stuff.

Cookies: Also, if anyone is able, I would appreciate some donations of baked or bought cookies, 1-2 dozen each. Please remember, we are peanut-free.

Trunk 'n Treat being planned

What costume will you wear? Will you decorate your car? How about a group costume that matches your car? Too much junk in your trunk to clean out....bring a lawn chair and pass out candy that way. We are now in the final stages of planning the 2nd Annual Trunk 'n Treat. It will be held on Wed. October 29th from 6-8pm. Children will be dismissed from their LOGOS classes early to put on their costumes and go Trunk 'n Treating. There will not be a family-style dinner this evening. Hotdogs and other refreshments will be served buffet style in Fellowship Hall. In the event of rain all activities will be moved indoors and we will have an alternative to the "trunk" part of the treating. If you would like to volunteer to help with this event or have an idea, please let Nancy or Wendy know. Trunk 'n Treat flyer is available here. This event is open to all. Kids may invite their friends to join them for Logos or to meet at 6:00 for Trunk 'n Treating.

Home Coming Nite at Logos

Here are a few photographs of the first night of LOGOS. Grins, Smiles and giggles were plentiful. Unfortunately, photographs are not. My camera quit on me during the first half hour, so I missed many of the activities, children, and volunteers who participated and contributed to a great LOGOS Home Coming.

Mark your calendars and join us as we embark on a new LOGOS year. We have many exciting things planned and hope that you will join us.

Wednesday, Sept. 10th at 6:30: Learn the Vital Ingredients your Child needs to Succeed in School & Life–Joan Wolf Schenker of The North Hills Youth Ministry counseling center will be presenting a parent workshop to equip you with The 40 Developmental Assets (which happens to be one of the foundations for LOGOS). Studies prove that children that who have a majority of these assets are less likely to exhibit at risk behavior and are more likely to become successful well-rounded young adults. Please bring your kids (in grades k-8) for a mini-LOGOS style childcare program at the same time. During your workshop the kids will enjoy an abbreviated LOGOS night. At the end of the workshop, parents will rejoin their kids for a snack. Rsvp by calling the church at 412-366-1338 or me at 412-759-9132. Invite a friend and share this valuable workshop. Anyone who works with children will find Joan’s presentation useful.
Sunday, September 14th from 4pm-7pm: You’re invited to a picnic. Heritage Church is hosting a picnic. Please come for some good food, good fun, and good fellowship! You may bring a covered dish to share, but it is not necessary. Forget about dinner…grab a hotdog with us.
Wednesday, September 17th at 6:30: Logos Parent Meeting. Learn more about the how the Logos programs program can benefit your family. You’ll receive an early bird $5 discount for registering at the meeting. If, for some reason, you are unable to attend, please call me to arrange a private meeting.
Wednesday, September 24th from 4pm-7pm: The first day of LOGOS…Yeah! The LOGOS program includes children in grades k-8. Sessions include snack, recreation, Bible study, craft and worship skills followed by a family style dinner where the children and adults have a meal, conversation and an after dinner activity. High School students and adults are welcomed to attend as helpers and stay for dinner. You and your family may even join your children for dinner (a menu will be posted on this blog soon). Where else can you get a great guest meal for $2!! Contact me if you know of a high school student that would like to volunteer. If you are interested in LOGOS, your children can sample it at the mini logos during the parenting workshop on the 10th and you may attend the parent meeting on the 17th to enroll your child or just to see what it is like and ask questions.

There is no RSVP needed for the parent meeting or church picnic, but I would appreciate an RSVP for the workshop if possible to plan for materials.
